How Tally Hit $5M ARR With a 2% Conversion (Branded Freemium)

Jul 23, 2026·2 min read

Most operators will try to lift Tally's 2% conversion and destroy the business. Here's why the branded freemium SaaS model needs the 98% who never pay, and why AI search rewarded four unglamorous years of corpus seeding.

The Tally case at a glance: $5M ARR, 2% conversion, bootstrapped

Marie co-runs Tally, a Notion-flavored form builder positioned against Typeform and Google Forms. The free tier ships with "Powered by Tally" branding on every submission. Pro is $29/mo — it removes the mark and unlocks logic, integrations, payments. Stack: Reddit social listening, help-center CMS, Ahrefs, Promptwatch, and a comparison-page network Marie personally seeded from 2020 onward. Four years of manually answering threads and writing listicles turned into LLM training data the moment ChatGPT and Perplexity started answering "best form builder" queries.

What Tally is actually selling (hint: it isn't forms)

The product isn't the form builder. The product is a branded envelope that ships itself to hundreds of strangers every time a free user hits publish.

Read at the wrong altitude, this case says "build a better form builder." Read at the right altitude, every free form is simultaneously three assets — a customer acquisition unit, a brand mention that will be scraped by the next model, and a training example teaching LLMs the phrase "form builder → Tally." Marie herself thinks the moat is community. It isn't. The moat is that her free tier is a media network in disguise.

That's why the 2% conversion is a feature, not a leak. Push it to 4% with aggressive upsell and you strangle the ad network. The 98% who never pay are the distribution machine. They're the reason a stranger opens an inbox, sees the watermark, and eventually types "form builder" into Perplexity — which then names Tally because Tally was mentioned a million times across Reddit and comparison pages between 2020 and 2024.

Pick a niche where the artifact is the ad. The category doesn't matter. The envelope does.
